Although Sarinbuana Eco Lodge is a very small business we acknowledge that our operations do leave a carbon footprint.
We further acknowledge that our guests, by traveling overseas to come here, also leave a carbon footprint.
- Carbon offsets for Guests:
Guests are welcome to contribute to our native tree planting program. Trees are planted to restore and enhance nature, while helping to offset carbon emissions resulting from overseas travel. - Eco Lodge carbon offsets:
We have kicked-off by planting the first 100, native, fruiting trees in the rainforest to enhance food supplies for local birds, bats, butterflies and animals while, at the same time, helping to offset our carbon footprint.
Precise calculations for carbon offsets are notoriously difficult. The Eco Lodge carbon offset program does not attempt to quantify carbon footprints, or exact offsets, it just plants long-living native trees on the basis that, apart from many ecosystem benefits, the trees will help to offset the carbon emissions, which result from our business operations.

Tree planting in Mt Batukaru rainforest |
Tree species selection criteria
Long lived (50years+) native species, especially those, which provide substantial food and/or habitat for wildlife, are generally preferred
Site selection criteria
- Sites inside protected areas are generally preferred
- Riverine areas are prioritized
- Eroding land is prioritized
- Community held land is acceptable (with agreements)
- Privately held land is acceptable only under certain circumstances, ie. With long term preservation agreements or on particularly sensitive or valuable (in terms of conservation) sites
PRICE*
Price, 1 x tree seedling, inc. planting and maintenance
Rp 25,000 per tree (approx € 2.00)
*ALL MONIES contributed for carbon offsets by Eco Lodge guests are used for the purchase and planting of trees, there are NO administration or other hidden costs.
Nature Conservation and Rehabilitation
Our first focus is on replanting native, fruiting trees inside the Mt Batukaru National Park to increase food resources for wildlife. Our area is already heavily wooded rainforest (inside the National Park) while local farmland is dominated by tree-crops – coffee, cacao, fruit and timber trees. Large, cleared areas do not exist here so the focus of this program is on creating maximum benefit in critical areas, rather than on planting large numbers of trees.
A ROUGH CARBON FOOTPRINT GUIDE FOR OVERSEAS TRAVELLERS
It is very difficult to be precise about carbon offsets so, as a guideline, we have borrowed the following from an orgaization we trust. The costs below for calculating carbon offsets for overseas flights were taken from the “Seacology” website.
| To and From | Australia | Europe | USA | USA | USA | Africa | South America |
| West coast | East coast | Midwest | |||||
| To Asia | €3.50 | €6.00 | €7.00 | €78.00 | €85.00 | €52.00 | €85.00 |
EXAMPLE
So, for example, if you”ve flown from Europe and you choose to offset your carbon emissions for your flights by planting trees in our area, you”d pay (Rp 410,000) €32.00 which would pay for the purchase and planting of 16 trees (any leftovers will be lumped together for further tree plantings)
A New Income Opportunity for Local People
SUPPLYING NATIVE-TREE SEEDLINGS – An offshoot of our new carbon offset program is creating new income opportunities for locals, who have now started producing tree seedlings for carbon offsets, reforestation and land rehabilitation projects. Locals have already received their first order for 750 tree seedlings each. To give you an idea of the value, a sale of 1,500trees = 1 new motorbike
