A Warrior’s Path:
Maya Medicine Retreat
October 17th-24th 2012
Sarinbuana Eco Lodge, Mount Batukaru, Tabanan, Bali
Set on the rainforested foothills of Mount Batukaru in Central Bali, this unique retreat will focus on igniting spiritual warriorship in our lives. In ancient times, the warrior learnt to master the challenges of life, acquiring a sense of personal freedom and power - not through violence or aggression, but through gentleness, courage and self-knowledge. In discovering the fundamental goodness of our lives we can face the world with openness and fearlessness, overcoming stale patterns, finding discipline and connecting with the sacred dimension in everyday life. To be a warrior is to learn to be genuine in every moment - to cultivate enlightened conduct - even whilst dreaming. Learning to shine as warriors, we can radiate this beneficence out into the world for the well-being of others.
Each participant will be closely guided through the retreat, step by step, with daily individual consultations and traditional Maya readings, and encouraged to cut through the obscurations of mind and heart to reconnect with their true source of power and wisdom. Through the week, we will explore our relationship with the ancestors and the guardians of the natural world and five elements (Earth, Fire, Water, Wind, Space) in the hope of developing a language, consciousness and nurturing way of living that inspires us to give life back to the Earth and our communities.
The Sweat Lodge is a place of Truth, a place where we confront our fears and face up to our responsibilities. Here, in the darkness of the lodge we can work through our own darkness and light, and unburden our hearts and minds of hesitation, conflict and stifled emotion. To see clearly means that we have to be able to look right to the bottom, all the way down, with transparency and precision. The lodge really is the microcosm, where our state of mind becomes amplified and our self-defence falls away, to the point where we can actually feel the texture of our emotions without running away. In this sacred and medicinal space, we are naturally inclined to soften and surrender, to make friends with our strength and vulnerability. The power to transform lies at the very heart of the sweat lodge; the poisonous grip of ego is transmuted, enabling the primordial intelligence to shine through.
The Retreat will consist of Five Sweat Lodges, one for each element for five consecutive days, from Thursday through to Monday. Daily open air early morning yoga will be offered before breakfast at Sarinbuana’s famous kitchen, after which we will head down to the ceremonial site by the river on secluded private land for our “limpias” (traditional Maya cleansings) and prepare for the day’s Sweat Lodge with offerings, grounding and purifying rituals and a fire ceremony. The Sweat Lodges will take place after lunch and may last up to 4 hours. There will be time to relax and enjoy a wonderful vegetarian buffet (some raw food) back at the Eco lodge in the evening. The final day, Tuesday, will be dedicated to restorative and meditative practice, and to enjoy the wonderful surroundings of Mount Batukaru.

What is Maya Medicine?
Maya Medicine is a system of natural medicine that has flourished in Maya culture for over two thousand years. Still widely practiced today in Southern Mexico, Maya Medicine is based on the principles of health through balance of the five elements and the interconnectedness of man and Nature. Maya Medicine heals by revitalising and grounding the life force energy inherent in all beings and establishing healthy relationships between the physical and non-physical world. Symptoms are traced back to the source of imbalance so that age-old problems can be cured, enhancing one’s personal growth and potential. Diagnosis is done by pulsing and egg reading: an egg is passed over the aura revealing the energetic blueprint of the individual.
